twitter fun

Hey all you guys.  I’ve been loving this twitter thing.  Its the first time in a while that i have been able to be in such immediate contact with people who share the same interests as i do.  I have never gotten into any of these things before because i can’t keep up with them.  I get started then head into the bush.  So you will have to forgive me when the blogging and tweeting goes on hold.  But for now, its fun

i have been trying to reply to as many posts as I can.  The photos that everyone sent of thier animals are so great.  I really think it is fun to get to know some of you out there.  I will try to keep it up as much as possible.  You guys keep tweeting and posting along with me.

by the way, one of you hockey loving tweeters told me that my username is wrong on this blog.  So for clarity my username on twitter is “davesalmoni”

rock on team!

You’re doing fine. Keep those pictures coming - it’s so amazing to see some of those shots of you with big cats! You have an incredible job! The best I’ve got is me with a screech owl… though, I think he thought he was as fierce as one of your lions - lol

You make me even more inspired to continue my aspirations of working with large cats. I recently became an intern at a tiger sanctuary, I feel incredibly honored to be working around such magnificent animals. I finally feel my hard work for my zoology degree is paying off and I can only hope to inspire others with the importance of wildlife conservation as you do. <3

came here since I didn’t think there was enough space to post on twitter. you mentioned somewhere that you spend most of the year away from home..have you in some ways replaced what most would say is the “normal” life of a partner and kids, with all the projects and work you do with animals? I would assume you have not had much luck finding someone who can handle you being absent for long periods of time, otherwise you would be taken by now. Or perhaps this is all okay with you, a life of a nomad? I guess from where I sit,I could only see that way as a waste, because from the bits and pieces that I have read from your SWL blogs, you would have had plenty of interesting things to offer to someone. All right enough of that, how about your animals. I happened upon you on a morning show once, discussing the incident at the zoo in san fran. you made a comment that suggested you felt more sympathy towards the dead tiger than you felt for the dead human..It seems as though there is more of a connection with the animals more so than with people? Anyway, I know too many questions, and not much probability of recieving any comments or answers, but worth a shot anyway, besides I can’t sleep again, and its this, shop Ebay or watch reruns of Whale Wars. Sorry for taking so much space,I would delete, but hell I already typed it all.Take Care.

hey dave. it took me forever to figure out how to leave a comment on your blog. haha well anyways im in college majoring in zoology. i have an internship with dolphins and sea lions right now. yeahh im a fish chucker. haha but i really want to work with big cats. they just fascinate me. ive been looking at internships in the midwest for next summer but i have recently been told by some of the dolphin trainers that me getting a job with big cats is unlikely. considering that they are so big it is easy for them to overpower and take advantage of small people. and well im 5′3 and 130 pounds. so im not very big. i want to work with big cats but if i cant i don’t want to waste my time doing internships with them when i can be doing internships with other animals. sooo i figured maybe you can shed some light on this for me?

And also did you major in zoology? I’ve heard its not the best route to go. I just wanted your opinion on that as well.
Thank you soooo much! best of luck with your cats your soo lucky. haha

    -Liz

hey dave. i don’t really know how to use this blog thing but i had a few questions. im in college majoring in zoology. I really want to work with big cats but i was told i may be too small. Im 5′3 130 pounds. I heard that being small its hard to get a job becuase the big cats will take advantage of you. I started an internship with dolphins and sealions and i love that.. I also heard that zoology isn’t the way to go? i figured you would be able to shed some light on this for me.

    Hi Dave,
I’m going to be a senior in High School (in the US) this year and I’ve just started that crazy finding-a-college process, and you have my absolute dream job. I’ve always been in love with big cats and I’m looking for a zoology degree but I can’t find a college that offers a good program.
I was wondering if you could talk me through your college experience? I need some insight into what I should be looking for. I’m really scared I’m going to go to the wrong college and end up being unhappy with my major.
So I dont really know how this blog thing works but email me back? I guess… haha
    Meg

    Hey Dave,

I watched you in Living With Tigers and you became my role model. My dream has been to work with tigers since I could walk. I am amazed at the relationships you have made with the cats and it makes me wanna work even harder towards working with them and helping them. I was wondering if you could tell me where you started and how you got to where you are today because I am a little lost… I am 20 years old and Im about to start college and do not know where to begin. I would very much appreciate it. Keep doing what you do and when your through I will take over lol

Dave, I’m watching “Into the Pride” now, and it’s GREAT! If I could work with animals, especially in the capacity that you do, I’m sure I’d never get enough. However… Why Shizzle and Manizzle (not sure how you spelled it) for names? I find that pretty tasteless.
I’m sorry about Brutus, he is a handsome guy, and I’m sure I’ll see soon why you feel that way you do about him through the show. I’ll be watching every episode!

Read an article in People about your time in the bush - very cool! Have had a love for animals and especially wild cats my entire life! Went to South Africa for the first time in 2006 on a Safari - was the best vacation ever! Thanks for sharing your adventures for other wildlife lovers to have a glimpse into their lives in a real way.

  22. Alynn Karnes Said:

Hi Dave. Let me start off with saying thank you. As an animal cat/animal lover (big and small) I appreciate the work you are doing in trying to save the precious lives of some magical creatures. I have just finished watching the first two episodes of Into the Pride. You are doing exactly what I have always dreamed of doing, but was always told by others, that I would never be able to accomplish. I know that my calling is to work with animals, it is something I have known since I was young. Big cats have always been a fascination of mine and I know that they need all the help they can get from us humans to survive. I am starting by volunteering at a lion rehabilitation and reintroduction facility in Zimbabwe, so hopefully in about 6 months I will get my first face to face lion encounter. It’s a start but I feel my biggest issue is trying to figure out what kind of schooling I need to get on the path to helping these endangered species, much like you do. When you ask a guidance counselor what kind of degree you would need to become a big cat trainer or run a conservation facility, they always seem to laugh and never give you a straight answer. So if you happen to get a minute in your busy schedule, could you maybe throw some ideas my way of what my next step should be. I have been told that zoology is too broad of a major, but I don’t know what else to pursue. Thanks for your time, and thank you for doing God’s work.

    Sincerely,
    Alynn

    Hi Dave
What a chance to see you on TV introducing your passion and a chance to hear your ideas and insight towards wildlife. Sir, I’m telling you, I have the same passion as you do. I totally support the whole idea of your work. By the way, I have this plan to go back to school and pursue my dream as a Zoologist. I don’t know how it’s gonna happen but hopefully in a year I’ll be able to start that career. Sir, maybe you can give me a help in direct manner too. It could be a message directly from you; ideas or it could be somebody like you who maybe are looking for voluntary service lol. I am actually a biology major and I still carry that until now although currently, I`m not working in that profession.I just need a little bit of help from from others to get in to my line of desire. Sir, you`re the man keep doing it.

    Hey Dave,
Idk… I left you a message on twitter, but didn’t get to say what I needed to. You truly inspire me to follow my dreams though, because I truly wish to interact with wildlife and have a Hollywood life as well which is not so easy. Currently I am a bio major at a small school in Ohio, but I do hope to transfer to Univ. San Diego for a double in Marine Bio and Zoology and wanted to see if there’s any way I can contact you more personally for professional questions?
Please twitter, facebook, or e-mail me back when you can.

Wow. I’m like, in shock right now… Can’t believe I missed this blog. Yay for twitteding; Ill probably be watching you.

And just because I felt a need to say this:
Dude, you’re my role model. Seriously. I’ve been wanted to work with animals of my life - I barked at dogs before I started talking - and for most of the time I just wanted to work as a domestic animal pet. But you… Watching your shows inspired me to do something more than that. It’s simply amazing to see you get up close to big cats. Gawd dude, you’re pretty much my flippin idol, hehe… de then I’ve decided to do something either as a trainer or a wildlife vet. But just… Thanks. Ya rock, dude!!

Hi Dave, tonite they aired Living w/ Tigers before the new eposode of In The Pride.8/27/09 WOW!! It seems to me i watched something like that a few years ago, probably about the same tigers but it was different than what i watched tonite. i will research it a ‘lil bit. and try to find, somewhere here on your site or some place as to what has happen, or where Ron and Julie are. since that was 9 yrs ago now, Before REsearching I have already set myself up for a heart breaking answer. so, i’ll deal w/ it tomarrow. what ever i find i would like to ask if u, have done a follow up-on camera if not personally, which i have no doubt u have. can u publish it? if u have, i’ve looked in the wrong places, as to where to find it.
i just wanted to get on here, now, for u to see that i like what u have done with your life and being who u are in training Humans as to the plight of our tigers, lions, our chetto’s cheetas, haha, leapards, panthers, snow leapards, and even our own mtn lions here in n.america or the smallest ‘lil kitty waiting for a good home from the aspca or the thousands of humane sociatys that are out there.
Dave, THNK YOU! more to follow later. Jay

I’ve really enjoyed watching “Into the Pride”. I hope you were successful in saving the lions of Elindi. I have a cat named Cleopatra, I call her Cleo, she’s 4 years old and is a black longhair kitty. Her attitude reminds me of Cleo Brutus’s mate. I’m so very sorry about Brutus dying, but hopefully his cubs will carry on his legacy. LoL Carryl

I’ll keep this short. I’m interested in doing an informational interview with you about your profession & current projects. Your production schedule may prohibit this, but it can all be done through email at your convenience. I didn’t know where to send this; I figured this was worth a shot. I’m in graduate school in Hawai’i right now & thats what this is all about. Hopefully I’ll hear back from you & we can talk details. If not… I wish you all the best! Keep up the amazing work! (There, that was my attempt at short).

    hey dave,

I have always been a “lion lover”. I just love how they protect and care for their cubs. How it comes so natural and instinctively to them is priceless. I have considered a degree in zoology because you said that is what you did. haha. and seeing as you have my dream job lol but if there is any way you could help me or show me some pointers it would help me greatly. i’m so lost. how did you get started. did you just have the right connections? Is this a deadend job for some people. I have seriously been considering looking in a different job field because i know how rare it is for someone to actually do what you do. if you could please write back.
    Thank you so much

    Hello Dave,
Let me first start by saying I think it is amazing what you do. All my life I grew up with Steve Irwin, he was my hero, and I have always wanted to be like him. I feel pretty content saying that you’re right next to him.
I’m currently working to become a vet technician and I’m hoping I can get my degree in animal science so I can some day travel the world like yourself and study these wonderful animals in the world, and maybe discover new animals. I know you’re probably not going to read this, but I figured why not. I’m 19, I live in the USA, and I can’t get enough of animals and learning how they work.
When I was 7, I lived in Alabama when Hurricane George hit, I took all the lizards and frogs I could find and put them in a bucket thinking they would drown. My mom wasn’t too happy about that lol.
I have been all over the USA and have studied animals as I moved around, I’ve been to Yellowstone twice and it is beautiful. I watched a mother bear and her two cubs, the bison fighting over a mate, the elk sing. The otters playing. It was a dream. I hope that some day I can do what you do, and find someone who enjoys animals as much as I do.
I’m also sorry to hear about Brutus, he was a beautiful lion.
I hope you’re doing well, and I hope to hear from you, I would love to hear your stories.
I’m sorry this comment is forever and a half long too lol.

    -Katrina Jumper

Wow, I have just recently found your show and find your work absolutely amazing. So much respect for someone who is opening up their life to educate people on animals. I have to say you are inspiring and I kind of laughed at myself when I googled your name tonight. Who knows if you read these and reply but just wanted to shout out to ya. Love your work!

  39. Caitlin Smith Said:

    Hey Dave

I live outside Red Lodge, Montana (about an hour outside of Yellowstone NP). As you can imagine, there has been a lot of talk about the wolf permits allowed for hunters this year. Do you think that Fish, Wildlife and Parks has jumped the gun?

Also, the Pryor Mustangs have been rounded up for culling during the last couple of days…we can see the dust, even from Red Lodge. I don’t believe that the culled horses will all be adopted out, with horse owners already not able to afford to keep their “tamed” animals. I’ve been mauled by a pet chimpanzee, which only reinforced my belief that wild animals should remain in the wild. What is you opinion on culling of wild mustangs?

  41. Jill Said:

Hi there. My name is Jill and I have a nearly 8 year old daughter who is an avid fan of Into the Pride…so much so that we are having an Into the Pride birthday this weekend for her…complete with a little Dave Salmoni, Rocket, Cleo (minus the tip of her tail), Brutus, Shizzle, Manizzle, Rough and Tumble on her cake. I just want to tell you what an inspiration you are…to her particularly as she is very passionate about wild cats and would love to rescue, preserve and protect them someday. But as her mom, I’ve heard that her interest in animals is odd and strange, etc. Why is her room decorated with wild cats and not princess stuff? kind of thing. In reading your biography, I see you became passionate about animals at such a young age and look at you now!Your success and your work makes me want to continue providing her with the experiences that she loves and the guidance to allow her to pursue the interests in her heart, not whatever is deemed “normal” for 8 year old girls. Thank you so much for all the work you do…you truly inspire people on a daily basis.
